Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) Interagency Work Group

Wednesday, July 19, 2000
MEMORANDUM FOR:
Human Resources Directors
From:
HENRY ROMERO (…signed July 14, 2000) ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR WORKFORCE COMPENSATION AND PERFORMANCE
Subject:
Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) Interagency Work Group

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) now requires all Federal agencies that collect occupational data to use the new Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. As I mentioned during the June 6, 2000, Executive Committee meeting, one of our current projects is to develop a crosswalk between the existing Federal occupational series structure and the SOC framework. To achieve this goal, we would like your help.

In developing the crosswalk, our immediate purpose will be to use existing Central Personnel Data File (CPDF) data to comply with this requirement. In other words, we want to be able to translate and report SOC data with minimal disruption to you.

Staff from OPM's Workforce Compensation and Performance Service, Classification Programs Division, will provide overall coordination and leadership for this effort, with assistance from OPM's Employment Service and Office of Merit Systems Oversight and Effectiveness. We plan to schedule a kick-off meeting during fourth quarter FY2000, hold periodic meetings as determined necessary, and complete the project within approximately 180 days.

I invite you to nominate representatives from your classification and/or personnel data systems staff(s) to participate in this ad hoc work group. Please advise Judy Davis, of my staff, at (202) 606-2950, or email her at jadavis@opm.gov by August 11, 2000, of your representative(s).

We look forward to working with you on this important project.
